19th Century

$Generations of local boys attended the Victorian grammar school and some carved their names into the rear wall where there was less chance of detection. W. Byford cut his name on this single brick in 1895(?) However, the largest carving, by H G Normandale, extends across 4 bricks. He was the son of the Revd. W G Normandale, the Headmaster 1888 - 1910: one wonder what his father\'s reaction was!$ $The carving of names continued into the 20th century, right up to the School\'s closure in 1987. Anthony Paul Whitehead lived at The Holgate in Melford Road and was a pupil at SGS from 1942 to 1945. An enthusiastic member of the Combined Cadet Force, he joined the Royal Marines in 1947. and$

$Look up next time you go to buy your paper at A & G News at No 6 Friars Street. This Victorian gas fitting survives from the time when there was no electricity but the town had its own gasworks (in Quay Lane). Older local people remember this shop as \'Fairheads\' - there is a picture on our Photo Archive of Mr Fairhead inside his shop and with the gas lamp clearly visible (image pa556)$

$Sudbury Fair in Gregory Street c1820. The self taught artist was a young local man, William Draper (1798-1825). On the left the \'idiot\' John Turte stands by the stocks and whipping post, watching a drunken fiddler. On the right is a fair stall and tents beyond, closer to the church. Hardly a great painting but an evocative picture of life in the town in the early 19th century. P.$ $\'Fairing ring\'?$

$Most of the church plate is Victorian. As the crossed keys suggest this fine silver offertory plate was originally given to St Peter\'s church by E.& E.G.Stedman of Belle Vue in 1857. Diam: 33cm.$ $A fine chalice and paten set, hallmarked 1861. In centre of plate an engraved Agnus Dei with inscription \'O Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.\' diam: 16.8cm. Chalice height: 19cm$
